ABORTION APPOINTMENT INFORMATION What you'll find on this page (shortcut to scrolling): Appointment InformationYou can schedule an appointment for a first trimester surgical procedure if the date from the first day of your last menstrual period is less than 14 weeks. This will be a vacuum aspiration procedure. First trimester appointments are available Monday-Friday in the morning. The length of time at the clinic is approximately 4 hours. If the date from the first day of your last menstrual period is 14 - 21.6 weeks, you can schedule an appointment for a second trimester procedure. This is called a dilation and evacuation procedure (D&E). This is a 2-day procedure scheduled Monday-Thursday in the morning. The length of time at the clinic is approximately 4 hours the first day and 4 hours the second day. A medical abortion is an alternative to surgical abortion and is usually done without entering the uterus. It is brought about by taking two medications that will end the pregnancy. You can schedule an appointment for a medical abortion if you aree 56 days or less from the first day of your last menstrual period. A medical abortion will require 2 visit to our clinic. When an appointment is made, please let us know all insurance/medical assistance information, as many plans do cover the fees. Insurances/medical assistance must be pre-approved prior to the day of your appointment. We recommend that you not drive yourself home after the surgical procedure. Either make arrangements for someone to pick you up or bring a companion with you to the clinic who can drive you home. (You may not drive if you choose to have a sedative.) Minors under 18 years of age are obligated to adhere to the Minnesota Parental Notification Law which states you must:
A small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm and a urine specimen will be collected for analysis. You will view a short film that describes the abortion procedure and reviews post-abortion instructions. Your companion(s) may join you if you wish. An ultrasound and/or exam will be done to determine the duration of your pregnancy. Your medical history will be reviewed. It is important for us to know if you have a history of diabetes, a heart murmur due to rheumatic fever, mitral valve prolapse, seizures, or are taking medications or drugs of any kind. These will not prevent you from having the procedure, but will require us to give you special instructions. Then you will have time to read your consent form, post-abortion instructions and any other literature you have received. You may choose to have a sedative with your procedure. These will not put you to sleep but may help you deal with the discomfort. If you choose a sedative, you must have someone driving you home or be taking a cab. If you have a sedative, plan on spending some additional time at the clinic. A member of our staff will spend some time with you and give you an opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. The consent form, the post-abortion instructions and birth control will also be reviewed. Next you will be seen by a cashier for payment of fees. If you are using insurance, coverage and benefits must have been verified by a member of our staff before you came to the clinic today. If it has not been verified, speak with one of our staff immediately; you may be asked to reschedule your appointment. We do not accept personal checks and we require full payment before the procedure. (For second trimester patients, payment must be made in full on the first appointment day.) If there are any additional services or medications required before or after your abortion, you are also expected to pay for those today -- such as additional lab work, Rhogam injection, etc. Once payment has been completed, you will have a seat in the lobby until the physician is available to see you. Our physicians are Board Certified gynecologists/obstetricians. The physician will have a procedure assistant and a patient assistant in the procedure room to explain each step of the procedure and to provide support. The first trimester surgical abortion procedure takes approximately five to ten minutes. A second trimester abortion requires more time. If you would like to fill out the medical history form ahead of time, please click here to download the form. Then simply print the form, fill it out and bring it with you to your appointment (NOTE: you will need Adobe Acrobat to read this file).
After the Abortion Following the abortion, you will walk with the patient assistant to the recovery room where you will rest for approximately half an hour. If you are having a second trimester procedure, your recovery room stay will be longer. After your discharge from the recovery room, please stop at the front desk to make an appointment for your three week checkup. This checkup is done at no charge only if you return within four weeks following your abortion. If you prefer, you may see your own physician. You will be responsible for any fees incurred at your own physician's office. Please take time to read your post-abortion instruction sheet. For a medical emergency, you can call us at 612-376-7940. For non-emergency information, please call us during normal working hours at 612-376-7708. We provide post-abortion counseling (one session), free of charge, to any Meadowbrook Women's Clinic patient who feels it would be helpful. This is by appointment only. We can also assist you in finding a medical or counseling referral at your request. Meadowbrook Women's Clinic, P.A.
