2-DAY DILATION & EVACUATION PROCEDURE
(14.0 to 21.6 weeks)

Dialation Procedure:
Depending upon how far along you are, you will have 1-10 osmotic dilators inserted into the cervix the first day. They slowly absorb moisture and expand, causing dilation of the cervical canal overnight. The physician will hold your cervix with a tenaculum. Placing the tenaculum on the cervix will cause discomfort. Then as dilators are inserted, expect pressure and mild to heavy cramping. After insertion, you will rest in the recovery room, where you will be given further instructions. Once the dilators are inserted, the procedure has begun and you MAY NOT change your mind. You must keep your next day appointment and follow all instructions to avoid jeopardizing your health. If your drive from home is more than 1 hour, you will need to make arrangements to stay overnight in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

IF YOU HAVE HEAVY BLEEDING FOR LONGER THAN 3 HOURS, SEVERE CRAMPING, AND/OR A TEMPERATURE OF 100.4 F OR HIGHER, CALL OUR EMERGENCY NUMBER: (612) 376-7940.

Remember These Instructions While Dilators Are In Place:
  • No tampons, douching or intercourse once the dilators are inserted. DO NOT put anything into the vagina.
  • You may have moderate to heavy cramping. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken to help relieve any discomfort.
  • Leakage of watery fluid is normal.
  • Some bleeding may occur requiring use of a pad.
  • If any dilators should fall out, wrap them in a plastic bag and bring them with you when you return for the evacuation part of your procedure.
  • You may shower, but DO NOT take a bath.
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything after 12:00 midnight the day before your procedure.
Evacuation Procedure:
Versed, a medication that causes relaxation, may be given (as well as nitrous oxide gas) for pain control. The physician will remove the dilators, cleanse the area, administer a local anesthetic, and use a vacuum aspirator, alternately with grasping instruments, to remove the pregnancy. You may have intense cramping, pulling, pressure and/or uterine pain. The physician or assistant may massage your lower abdomen, briefly increasing pressure, to help your uterus contract and decrease bleeding. A patient assistant is with you throughout the procedure to help you relax and provide support.
