1-DAY DILATION & EVACUATION PROCEDURE
(14.0 to 15.6 weeks, available on Fridays only)

Dialation Procedure:
One to three osmotic dilators are inserted into the cervix in the morning. The dilators absorb moisture, thus expanding and causing the cervical canal to dilate. It takes only a few minutes to insert these dilators. The physician will hold your cervix with a tenaculum. Placing the tenaculum on the cervix will cause discomfort. Then as dilators are inserted, expect pressure and mild to heavy cramping. After insertion, you will briefly rest in the recovery room and receive further instructions. Once the dilators are inserted, the procedure has begun. You MAY NOT change your mind and you must follow directions carefully or you could jeopardize your health.

The dilators must remain in the cervix for a minimum of 3-4 hours. You will be free to walk about the building/grounds, but do not leave the area of the hospital and clinic. Keep in mind you may not eat or drink anything.

Some bleeding and cramping is normal. DO NOT INSERT ANYTHING IN THE VAGINA. IF YOU HAVE SEVERE CRAMPING OR HEAVY BLEEDING, RETURN TO THE CLINIC AND CHECK IN AT THE FRONT DESK.

Remember These Instructions While Dilators Are In Place:
  • No tampons, douching or intercourse once the dilators are inserted. DO NOT put anything into the vagina.
  • You may have moderate to heavy cramping. A non-prescription drug may be taken to help relieve any discomfort. Ask a nurse before you take any medications.
  • Leakage of watery fluid is normal.
  • Some bleeding may occur requiring use of a pad.
  • If any dilators should fall out, wrap them in a plastic bag and bring them with you when you return for the evacuation part of your procedure.
Evacuation Procedure:
Versed, a medication that causes relaxation, may be given (as well as nitrous oxide gas) for pain control. The physician will remove the dilators, cleanse the area, administer a local anesthetic, and use a vacuum aspirator, alternately with grasping instruments, to remove the pregnancy. You may have intense cramping, pulling, pressure and/or uterine pain. The physician or assistant may massage your lower abdomen, briefly increasing pressure, to help your uterus contract and decrease bleeding. A patient assistant is with you throughout the procedure to help you relax and provide support.
